Het is een drager van cruciale gegevens. Als deze gegevens tussen verschillende organisaties uitgewisseld worden zijn afspraken over de indeling van deze uitwisseling van groot belang. De afgelopen decennia zijn daarvoor berichtstandaarden ontstaan die organisatie overstijgend zijn.
