Ondanks zijn bedreigde status en wettelijke bescherming blijft het Atlantische Woud krimpen als gevolg van door mensen gedreven activiteiten. Minder dan 8% van de oorspronkelijke oppervlakte van de bossen blijft over WeForest herstelt de Upper Paran\u00e1 Atlantic Rainforest Ecoregio om de huidige niveaus van habitatverlies om te keren.<\/p>\n

Als gevolg van het intensieve landgebruik in Oost-Brazili\u00eb is het boslandschap gereduceerd tot kleine, verspreide bosfragmenten die nu worden omringd door door mensen gewijzigde habitats (bijvoorbeeld weiden, akkerland en stedelijke gebieden). WeForest bouwt natuurcorridors tussen bosfragmenten, die te klein zijn om levensvatbare populaties van bedreigde fauna in stand te houden. Door het aanleggen van doorgangen wil het project een netwerk van beschermde gebieden bouwen die gebaseerd zijn op natuurlijke (in tegenstelling tot politieke) grenzen.<\/p>\n

Het Security Leadership congres plant dit jaar 5 bomen in Brazili\u00eb via WeForest. Bomen zijn \u00e9\u00e9n van de meest effectieve manieren om de opwarming van de aarde stoppen als gevolg van de koolstof die ze uit de atmosfeer halen. Bomen dragen ook in hoge mate bij aan het in evenwicht brengen van de waterkringloop, waardoor de bodemvruchtbaarheid wordt verbeterd en verbetering van de levenskwaliteit van de armste gemeenschappen.<\/p>\n

Waar planten we?<\/h4>\n

De herstelinspanningen zijn geconcentreerd in de ecoregio Boven Paran\u00e1 Atlantisch regenwoud, in Pontal do Paranapanema, in het westen van de staat S\u00e3o Paolo, waar het binnenland van het Atlantische Woud is teruggebracht tot ongeveer 2% van zijn oorspronkelijke oppervlakte. Er zijn 25 beschermde gebieden die deel uitmaken van de site, in totaal zo’n 470.000 ha. Deze tonen de biologische rijkdom en evolutionaire geschiedenis van de laatst overgebleven Atlantische bossen. In samenwerking met lokale belanghebbenden bestrijdt WeForest het voortschrijdende verlies aan biodiversiteit in de bovenste Paran\u00e1 Atlantic Rainforest Ecoregio, in overeenstemming met het Verdrag inzake biologische diversiteit. Het project werd op een participatieve manier geformuleerd, met een integrale benadering en met veel aandacht voor de sociale ontwikkeling van de lokale gemeenschappen.[\/vc_column_text]
